[This is the wiki-development area for this unit of the "New Media for Urban Change" course at C4UI.]

Unit #5 & #6 -- Web Development...   "Have You Met  A.D.D.I.E.?"

  • [See the OFFICIAL page re this unit at UrbanNewMedia.org... including official assignments for Unit #5.]
  • Right now... the following are just NOTES during Bryan's lecture tonight...
  • Bryan:  Tonight we're going to learn about learning.  It's best to know what you're readers NEED and How they learn... before you design your web strategy.  [User-sensitive design]
  • Effectiveness of... (Retention Rate)... [source, Bryan???]

  • Lecture only... 5%
  • Reading only... 10%
  • Audio-Visual...20%
  • Demonstration...30%
  • Discussion Group.. 50%
  • Practice by doing...  75%
  • Applying learning in a real situation...  90%
  • I Peter 4:10 -- using your gifts.  "Do what you do best."
  • Eph 4:7 --
  • I Cor. 9:22 --
  •
  • A.D.D.I.E.... is a development model.  (not a learning theory)
  • It's iterative... doing FORMATIVE evaluation all the way along.  But at the end of the course, we'll do a SUMMATIVE evaluation.
  •
  • Analysis... the need, the audience, their learning styles, etc.
  • also... development test items...  and plan instruction strategies... identify resources.
  • consider a Project Timeline... with milestones... (where does this fit into the ADDIE model?)
  • what are the delivery options?  (in our case, new media)
  • learning domains... cognitive, affective, and psychomotor.  (head, heart & hands).... People don't care what you know, until they know that you care.  Story-telling may not only be a good method re instruction, but stories may evoke emotion that'll help us learn.   Eg... typing characters vs. point-click.  Also... point-size.
  • Bloom's Taxonomy.
  • Design... write target audience, target objectives... usually sounds like this... "At the end of this instruction, the learner will be able to...."  Design is more theoretical... specifying the 'How'-- whereas Development is more tangible.   What skills should the audience have?  (eg. typing).  What testing/assessment to see if objectives have been achieved?  Learning achieved?  What media... and what resources will be needed?  What kind of delivery system will be used?  What technology availability?  Design an outline.
  • Mager's Theory of Behavioral Objectives (ie, outcomes are particular behaviors).  3 elements... Specific/observable (push key with your fingers).  Conditions (under which the behavior is to be completed.... or what tools must be available).  Standard... quantity & quality.  [triagle image]
  • Use words like... list, identify, state, describe, define, solve, compare/contrast, operate.
  • "At the end of this instructions, you will be able to...."
  • 9 activities of learning...
  • Sequencing... teach in the same sequence as people will be doing it on the job.
  • Simple to Complex
  • Critical Sequence
  • Known to unknown
  • Depdendent relationship
  • Supportive relationship...
  • Cause to Effect...
  • Use of Paper-Prototypes, and Mock-ups....
  • allow criticism, sketch, stays away from distractive arguments re color, etc.  Simple design is always good. (???)
  • test vs. well established heuristics about design... 6 secs to load, etc.
  • 4 stages of prototype-building... concept design (explore metaphors & design strategies), interaction design (organize the structure of the screens), screen design, screen-testing.
  • Development...
  • Formative evaluation is assessing work-in-progress... obtaining feeback along the way.
  • Implementation...
  • aaaa
  • Evalution...

[Thought... Vista is now moving toward the tagging & digging paradim (in their op sys... and folder setup).]

ARCS Model?

Assignment for this next week... "Design a training program to include the following:

  • real person -- negotiate what you can teach them.  -- for now, just face-to-face teaching (not web-based training).
  • training need
  • needs analysis (using same form)... eg. psychomotor can be typing skills...
  • complete the learner analysis... and also talk about how you felt it all went... ie, evaluate yourself somewhat.
  • email result

Purpose of it is to prep us to do a very real project later in the course.

Stray Thoughts & Potential Resource Links for the future...

  • An overview of using MS Agents and what they can do in a PowerPoint Video instructonal presentation.  Disclaimer: This video is not a step by step instruction on how to install the software needed.  Some knowledge of programming is assumed.  My apologies if I am talking too fast. Bear with me, I am using "stone knives and bear skins" to do this: a d-up (so I needed to keep it short and sweet to be able to upload it without broadband) and I was working without a pop-filter on the mike. When I do the Step by Step pre-quel to this, I will talk about
    1. installation of the special software needed (free) and
    2. give a small tour of CamStudio (which I used to produce this video - also free!)
  • I am uploading video at YouTube as I write so I will have to come back and insert the link for the gadget.  (See HOW LONG D-up takes when you're having fun?! 11:36pm.  But I am secretly glad of D-up since it helps me produce one of the fruitages of the Spirit: Patience!)

  • This is not your father's Oldsmobile-website anymore.... LOL... Remember... Due to the new Web2.0 way of life... Your 'web strategy' is not just about a web SITE.... because your components may in fact have a much further reach than simply among those who 'come to' your site.  RSS takes your site to them.  So do any components or apps you may develop.  Or your social networkg interactions.
  • research this... valedictorians did NOT do better in life than other kids... esp. re making an impact in society.  (Bryan?).  If true, there are great ramifications to CBC's composite outcome of training... isn't there?
