About Indy Scorecard...

"Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."  [ref]

Objective:    Answer the question...

"How are we, the citywide Church, doing at the Whole Commission in Greater Indianapolis?"

Admittedly, the few bullets below are an over-simplification.  But hopefully, these few rolled-up categories will serve as some lead indicators of how the overall mission is going currently, and what our future prospects are.

[If you'd like to help develop the Indy Scorecard further, please indicate that at the bottom of this page.]

"For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure,

they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive

in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."  [ref]

"so that the body of Christ may be built up

until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God

and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." [ref]

Bottom-line Effectiveness?  'Biblical Worldview'.

This may not be the ultimate indicator, but it certainly gives us a picture of how things are going.  Barna Research reports that transformation is observable as one's worldview becomes more biblical.  Unfortunately though, nationally only 9% of American adults hold a 'biblical worldview'.  (2013 Indianapolis 12% 'Evangelicals').  And our cities look like it.  Something has to change.  And that something is 'us'... the Church.  Surely if the Church of Jesus Christ were actively carrying out its mission as prescribed in scripture, the outcomes would be objectively obvious.  "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit."  We don't (yet) know what our effectiveness percentage is here in the metro area... but surely we have a long way to go, no matter what it is.

How will any of this change?

Bible...  It's foundational to everything -- God's very special communication to the world.  Research says that the number-one indicator toward spiritual growth is reading through the scriptures. So reading it & studying it must be the primary preparation for the mission at hand.  Apparently only 2% of Americans have ever read through the Bible entirely -- is it any wonder then, that only 9% hold a biblical worldview?  So we intend to try to determine how many metro residents are reading through the Bible this year.  There are many 'read-thru' plans -- see the Bible-link above.  And there is at least one weekly group formed which is helping their constituents read through it this year... and every year.  And here's a group of pastors studying the Bible together.  What a concept.

Prayer... Can you think of a better way to create 'change' in the world?  Our city?  Your neighborhood?  "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray..."  So tell me how much prayer is going on for our community, and I'll tell you the likelihood of success in reaching our friends & neighbors with the good news that changes lives & communities.  We are currently aggregating info from quite a number of prayer groups within Indianapolis.  For now, our focal measure will be the number of participants in the citywide 'Community Prayer Siren Alerts System' -- ie, those who can receive mobile alerts, even in the case of an emergency, and can quickly retweet & share important prayer items throughout our city.  Later we would like to know how many people those leader-types reach through their various prayer constituencies.

Care....  Jesus commanded us, as He summed up scripture, to Love our neighbors as ourselves.  So isn't it a fair question to ask of our neighbors, "Hey how are we doing?  Does the Church love you?  For instance, how about the Church that meets closest to your home?  Rate us... say 5 stars down to 1 star.  How are we doing?"  We realize that not all the world understands the Church, or ever will understand God's truth being conveyed through driven Christians.  But surely this is a worthwhile metric, even if the answer would initially be embarrassing to us all, today.  When it comes to caring, actions speak louder than words.  And these caring actions will no doubt help various secular indicators improve too... such as crime, education, families, health, and economics.  Bottom line, the goal is to walk-out our beliefs daily.  And let's see if we can make a dent in this theoretical metric by the end of the year.  [Here are some 2009 outcomes of FHL, for example].

Share...  What pastor or local church has a measurable goal to optimally share that good news, by deed and by Word, with 100% of its neighbors?

Discipling... OT's... Operation Timothy... Life-on-life 'Paul/Timothy' discipleship training... a tried & true way to replicate disciple-makers"Pray the Lord of the harvest will send forth workers."  Tell me how many Pauls & Timothys are actively involved in such a training relationship, and I'll tell you the prospects of reaching Indianapolis in the future.  Admittedly this particular program is for men.  But perhaps someone knows of a similar program for women?

Connected... When we think about 'the Church' as seen in scripture... flourishing... and what we actually see in our churches today... 9% effective... we readily see at least one major difference...  they're so 'connected' they even share things for the common good.  [Read more.]  The Transform Indiana networking initiative is actively working to make a difference in our cities by helping re-connect the Church... diversely... urban & suburban.  Connected by the John 17 bond Christ calls us to, as a witness to our witness.  And this is at least sybolically measurable.  The 'City Reaching Movement' group in Facebook is a small but available measurement.  And it's something YOU can do something about... today.

Multicultural... Ok really, how diverse are we?   Let's be honest -- let's not just wink at it.  Connected by the John 17 bond Christ calls us to, as a witness to our witness.  And this is measurable.  [Learn more re the Multicultural Church].  And let's consider something YOU can do something about in YOUR church... today.

GEO Teamwork... How does an effective team become effective?  Ask yourselves... WWTD?  ("What Would Tony Do?" **wink**)   Commit to be intentional about the mission, our collective goals & objectives... and working collaboratively... believing much more can be accomplished together than separately.  How many of our cityreachers in Indy are in covenant together to make a difference?  What would true 'teamwork' look like?  What would we have to be good at, Tony?   How can we measure it (at least symbolically) to know that in fact we're actually doing it?

Communications Tools - Dare... to be innovative.  Do something you've not done before.  If a 'team' is going to be effective in working together, then isn't it important that they find/build their most 'collaborative' capabilities and train together on them?  In our case, we're now TRAINING ourselves to use COLLABORATIVE tools... and thus be able to model collaboration among the Church here in Indy.
