Examples of New Media for Urban Change

Page history last edited by indychristian 2 yrs ago

Collecting some examples of "New Media for Urban Change"...

Help us draft a list of examples... Until it's 'complete'... it's way incomplete.  So stay tuned -- don't prejudge.

  • [There's a whole lot of liveblogging going on during the CCDA St. Louis 2007 conference.... What can we discern from some of these bloggers?  Leave comments below, anyone... ideas, thoughts, solutions?  Remember the password is shown in the CityReaching Movement (Facebook group)]

  • Chaotic Christians vodcast... this week's episode takes place while they're busily packing Boxes of Love for Bright Hope Ministry.  [way to go, guys, using new media to get the word out... and modeling it yourselves.]
  • [from Jeremy Del Rio, Workshop at CCDA:  "Webspace: When Neighborhood Relocates Online"... "Average American teenagers who consume 72 hours of digital media every week digest that media digitally.  21st century youth ministers who hope to engage this digital generation cannot do so effectively until we utilize new media strategies wisely.  Thanks, Neil, for exploring the outer reached of technology and for so freely sharing your experiences with the rest of us."
  • [Go review "Why Blog? Top 50 Reasons"]
  • Couples who met online -- how much more CHANGE could you find, than that?
  • One high schooler's compelling video posted on YouTube stirs the discussion of racial perceptions.  It has been viewed nearly 100,000 times, not to mention its viewing on tv-news.  [If it doesn't stir your heart-strings and your actions... well, you need to get a heart checkup.]   For me, it provoked a blog-posting centered on evolution as racism.
  • Beggar2Blogger.com -- a small-group befriends the homeless, and chronicle their plight to raise awareness and seek solutions.
  • Blogathon 2007 for Charities
  • YouTube video: Cabrini Connection -- Tutor/Mentor programs.
  • YouTube video: Carbrina Music Video
  • YouTube video: Cabrini Conference
  • Here are some (secular) video-documentaries at YouTube... re inner city... and gentrification.  'Information for Understanding'... is a first-step for change.
  • Video for JobsForYouth.org.
  • Live-blogging the Butler students presentations at the cafe.
  • Urban Projects Day wiki, to quickly collaborate for impact.
  • IndyChristian.com -- my personal experience with new media being used for city change.  When I (Neil) was new in Indy and needing to connect with my Christian brothers & sisters to network, network, network for my next job/contract, I knew no one.  And no centralized website was available & connected to the body of Christ in Indy.  Now, IndyChristian.com is easy to find in the search-engines if you're looking for Christian sites and networks... and we have an EMPLOYMENT wiki-page with a number of great links as a starting point for connecting for jobs.
  • Sit back and think about the friends you have right now -- How many of them did you come to know directly/indirectly via the internet?  For me (Neil)... nearly 100%.  Even the people you meet in the real-world, perhaps your relationships are accelerated because of some web dynamics.... eg... shaking hands with the people in the pew behind you this Sunday, and later discover online what they're all about; the following Sunday suddenly you know them lots better.  At The ROCC, suddenly because of social networking online, I can know lots more about the people in my small church, than I could EVER have known otherwise.
  • "A witness gave police a digital video of the fight in the park."  Such a video could identify the shooter and very effectively validate other facts/evidence for certain conviction).  Also think of the increasing amount of security cameras being put in place every single day now.
  • Wiki'd the script to quickly then go do Mike's shoot... for CityReaching.
  • Facebook 'causes'.  Networking.  Prayer.   ...and much more.
  • Innovative
  • Info for Change
  • UBcafe -- a relatively unknown inner-city ministry, suddenly has people watching it from around the world.  Dr. Perkins visited.  Eric Swanson visited.  Daniel Bernard visited.  ...and the list goes on.  Conversely, neighbors served by the cafe now have internet access and are learning internet capabilities.  Suburban geeks have inner-city friends.  Inner-city friends have more suburban friends.  Their video is now on YouTube, and they've hosted Live Podcasting from the cafe.  Faith Hope & Love focused on the cafe neighborhood for "Urban Projects Day"... and used a wiki to expedite the projects.   Much of the above could start occurring when TechMission type guys & gals helped install wireless internet there and started conducting "Ask Anything Saturday" sessions... free & friendly.
  • Media Camp kids producing Abstinence PSA's.... to impact their peers.
  • Stock example -- reflecting value-changes based on innovation.
  • Preacher vs. Bloggers example (given at Innovation Forum 2005) -- Preachers preached to 500 people this week.  Josh C. had 11,000 hits.... Tuesday.  THAT's the power of new media!
  • Mike's story re his avatar... and live encounter with a friend who did NOT know for sure about eternal life.
  • Southern Baptist Convention election results very much affected by the bloggers among them.
  • Memphis church internal struggles with pastor... the fight goes to the blogosphere.  Is this new media example a BAD change in the way we do 'church'?  [discuss]
  • An urban teen (girl) attended media camp here in Indy and produced a short-film on YouTube.  One thing led to another, as people saw it.  Today she's going to Depauw Univ. on a $120,000 scholarship.  [Obviously there are many other factors involved... but development of her 21st Century skills GREATLY increased her chances of such success.]
  • FOOD wiki-page -- Christians working together in the wiki, to centrally post what they know about great opportunities to help those in need of foo.
  • Transportation -- likewise.  Perhaps other WYNS wiki-pages?
