Projects for "New Media for Urban Change"

Project teams (of 4 students) will work together to demonstrate course principles as they serve a local urban ministry or collaboration of ministries.  Teams will devise their own projects, subject to approval by the course instructor.

Evaluation Priorities:

  • Potential for Long-term Impact for the targeted urban ministry or coalition.
  • Number of our key Web2.0 applications implemented in the project.
  • Degree to which the project demonstrates collaborative principles.
  • Reusability -- Potential for compounding the value of this project, by future classes or other targeted ministries.

  • Creativity
  •

Evaluators:

  • Instructor & Course Designer (25%)
  • Urban Ministry's Leadership Staff (25%)
  • CityReachers  voting online. (25%)
  • Other Teams (15%)
  • Voters at your social network of choice.  (10%)
  • (others?)

Special Notes:    Because we want our students 'thinking outside the box', please discard engrained notions such as... having to do everything on your own, NOT working together with other teams, copying other people's ideas, etc.  The fact is, we WANT to leverage the value of past & future classes.  In fact, we want to leverage the value of networking & collaborating extensively to develop your projects.  You will need to demonstrate though, that you (EACH team-member) were personally responsible for the foundational building-blocks of the project.  Example:  Get as many others around the internet to help you as possible... but make sure you personally are leading them (directly or indirectly).  Another example:  Viral marketing a YouTube video to benefit your urban ministry... make sure you're significantly involved in the production of the video.  Clarifications -- ask your instructor.

Caveat:  Plagarism or copyright infringement is absolutely forbidden.

Stray Thoughts...

  • Adding RSS feeds to urban ministry sites... like Westside Community Ministries.
  • Editing WYNS wiki-page(s)... eg. Employment.
  • See county-by-county lists of Bible-believing churches & pastors.  Help improve the Marion County list.
  • Call/survey urban pastors -- get their inputs about something in particular... something that would help ALL OF US, especially as we train urban cityreachers.  During the call or visit... add helpfulness to their ministry by sharing something significant to their ministry... eg. WYNS (compassion-focused) wiki-pages.... or let them know about the IndyChristian.NET customizable map they could potentially be on... or Indy Timeline of collaborative events... etc.
  • Go serve as a Web2.0 servant/mentor.  Help one-on-one with a pastor/leader's biggest obstacle.  Maybe help train his secretary or staff.
  • [Hey let's produce a class video-clip FIRST... which any of our people can then take with them to show the pastor/leader... so he'll have a better idea what it is our students are doing there.]
  • Go survey urban churches & ministries re their state-of-internet-readiness.  [develop such a survey as a class, first.  Maybe announce the project on '1310 The Light' and on WGNR... and YouTube, etc... as a PSA.  Ask people to visit "CenterForUrbanInnovation.com" to ensure their church or ministry gets considered for this project.
  • Think about the Katrina disaster... especially its impact on inner-city folks... without good communication and transportation out, in case of emergencies.  Go visit the Emergencies & Disasters Management wiki-page here inside CityReaching.org... and also visit the Indianapolis Communications page... What ideas come to mind re helping one or more urban churches/ministries prepare their state of readiness... including their communications-readiness.  [Remember, one big problem many Katrina victims are still suffering... is lack of communications with their church, members, neighbors, etc... Do you have a plan to preclude that problem here in Indy communities?  What other projects come to mind?  What if the church webmaster gets swept away in an Indiana 'hurricane'?
  • Help build-out the Communications Center for Indianapolis Christians?   Especially focus on those with the LEAST information or ability to communicate... whether an emergency or regular communications.
  • Help overhaul the WYNS blog & related wiki-pages.  Maybe dissolve the CEOindy.com page.  Incorporate tag-feeds into the surviving site(s)... for instaneous freshness.
  • Maybe teach TEXTING to urban leaders?
  • From Daniel Bassill... Tutor/Mentor Connection (Chicago)... "If you were able to develop the capacity to host webinars, I'd like to be a partner in developing the content and purpose for those, as well as the marketing so we reach more and more people over time."
  • One good place to consider... would be to contact the Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center (and Great Indy Neighborhoods... GINI initiative).  But look at their (poor) website.  Obviously they don't use it as part of their solutions.  [But beware... the INRC focuses on 11 core objectives for a neighborhood... none of which are 'spiritual'... or even 'family'.   Btw, here's a link to their Discussion Board... perhaps an excellent place for us to encourage Christians to participate.
  • "10 Things You Could Do"
  • Consider the thoughts & conclusions from the recent CCDA conference re how 'new media' could help prosper urban change.
  • Perhaps ChristianVolunteering.org could connect with ChurchCareIndy system somehow?  [Think about the 'Wanda' case.]
  • Help ensure an urban ministry is well represented in the CityReaching (wiki) Encyclopedia... so people can learn from them, and they can be encouraged to connect & learn from others.
  • Go attend an urban neighborhood meeting... and listen for what needs to be done next, re something you have the capabilities to help with, using new media.  Eg, cafe neighborhood meeting on Nov. 19th.
  • Consider helping Pastor/Professor Walt Willett re Grace Baptist Church of Indy Neighborhood House.  Go talk with him and explore his 'new media' needs.
